Megaupload, one of the internet's largest file-sharing sites, has been shut down by officials in the US.

The site's founders have been charged with violating piracy laws.

Federal prosecutors have accused it of costing copyright holders more than $500m (£320m) in lost revenue. The firm says it was diligent in responding to complaints about pirated material.

The news came a day after anti-piracy law protests, but investigators said they were ordered two weeks ago.

The US Justice Department said that Megaupload's two co-founders Kim Dotcom, formerly known as Kim Schmitz, and Mathias Ortmann were arrested in Auckland, New Zealand along with two other employees of the business at the request of US officials. It added that three other defendants were still at large.

"This action is among the largest criminal copyright cases ever brought by the United States and directly targets the misuse of a public content storage and distribution site to commit and facilitate intellectual property crime," said a statement posted on its website.

Chỉ một ngày sau cuộc biểu tình chống dự luật bản quyền Internet, dịch vụ chia sẻ file trực tuyến thuộc hàng lớn nhất thế giới bị đóng cửa với tội danh "sao chép nội dung trái phép". Lập tức, website của Bộ Tư pháp Mỹ bị sập.

Nhóm hacker nổi tiếng thế giới từng tuyên bố sẽ trả đũa nếu dự luật SOPA và PIPA được thông qua. PIPA sẽ được Thượng viện Mỹ biểu quyết vào ngày 24/1. Ngày 18/1, đồng loạt các website lớn như Google, Wired, Wikipedia, Firefox... đã bôi đen các bài viết để chứng minh với thế giới rằng việc kiểm duyệt nội dung, ngăn người sử dụng tiếp cận thông tin miễn phí sẽ gây bức xúc như thế nào.

Tuy nhiên, đến sáng 19/1, Bộ tư pháp Mỹ tuyên bố đóng cửa Megaupload, dịch vụ lưu trữ thông tin và chia sẻ file nổi tiếng. Bảy người bị buộc tội và có thể phải đối mặt với án tù tổng cộng 50 năm. Bộ Tư pháp Mỹ khẳng định vụ Megaupload "nằm trong số những vụ chống vi phạm bản quyền lớn nhất do Mỹ thực hiện".

Ngay chiều hôm đó, website của Bộ tư pháp, Hiệp hội công nghiệp thu âm, Hiệp hội điện ảnh Mỹ và hãng Universal Music bị tấn công từ chối dịch vụ khiến mọi người không thể truy cập. "Thành tích" này đã được Anonymous thừa nhận trên Twitter.

SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) và PIPA (Protect IP Act), đang được Quốc hội Mỹ xem xét, là hai dự luật gây tranh cãi có mục đích gần giống nhau: Nếu một site đặt máy chủ ở nước ngoài có nội dung vi phạm bản quyền, tòa án Mỹ sẽ có quyền xóa sổ trang web đó (ngăn truy cập của người Mỹ đến trang web, yêu cầu Google loại bỏ khỏi công cụ tìm kiếm...). Dự luật nghe có vẻ chỉ giới hạn trong phạm vi nước Mỹ, tuy nhiên, không ít hãng dịch vụ Internet Mỹ đang đặt máy chủ ở nhiều quốc gia trên toàn cầu, cũng như nhiều công ty nước ngoài đang dùng tên miền từ các nhà cung cấp dịch vụ Mỹ cũng sẽ bị kiểm soát thông tin theo quy định của SOPA.
