What’s New in Toad for Oracle 12?
The upcoming major release of Toad for Oracle 12.0 marks yet another significant milestone in Toad’s long history.
We are really excited about this release because it will bring Toad, and its popular community Toad World, together, enabling you to engage with other users and the wealth of shared knowledge they have, as well as the knowledge and expertise of our own technology and product experts.
Available soon, the new Toad for Oracle 12.0 is packed with the functionalities to:
Support and leverage the Toad World community of 3 million by unleashing the power of that huge knowledge base without ever leaving your work in Toad
Enrich user experience and provide enhanced productivity
So what are some of the new features coming in Toad 12.0?
Connected Intelligence – This is how we’re describing the new Forum window in Toad – like “collective intelligence” but enabled through human connections. You will have access to the huge knowledge base of the Toad community for both Toad, Oracle, and general technology discussions.
Why would I use it? – Browse, search, ask questions and start discussions directly in the Toad forums while using Toad. Spend more time in Toad getting stuff done! Get access to an extensive knowledge pool of Toad users and interact with them for sharing suggestions and seeking advice or help solving a challenge. Here is a sample Forum window in Toad:
Compare Multiple Schemas (requires the DB Admin module) – Ability to choose multiple schemas in source and destination and compare them.
Why would I use it? – Do you have large number of schemas in your database that need to be compared across your TEST and PROD environments? This new feature gives you the ability to do so in least amount of time. No need to select individual schemas.
Jump – Toad and Jump (that’s funny) – This feature, in my opinion, steals the show when it comes to advancements in the product. This is the old search feature on steroids. You will have the ability to literally jump to any Toad Window, Toad Menu item, the Toad World community forum, and support article after typing in the relevant search text.
Why would I use it? – When you get an Oracle error message you don’t understand or you just need some information about a Toad feature, rather than typing text into a field and open/login to multiple sources. Wouldn’t you rather jump to context sensitive menus, options and even forum threads, to find what you need or solve your problem quickly?
The below screen shot takes a user from the jump option to the relevant menu item in Toad (Text typed in Jump – “tablespace”):
The tablespace Menu item is highlighted. Double-clicking here takes you immediately to the correct Database – Administer – Tablespaces menu right from the Jump results:
Team Coding Dashboard – So what’s new you ask? Yes, Team Coding has been around for many years supporting development teams using version control, but this Toad for Oracle 12 release brings many new features. There is a brand new user interface (Team Coding Dashboard) which provides a much easier-to-use interface to using Team Coding, enhanced messaging and new features enabling easier integration with the version control systems. Also, added support for Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2012.
Why would I use it? – Toad for Oracle has support for a wide range of Version Control Systems (CVS, IBM Rational ClearCase, Microsoft Team Foundation Server, Perforce and Subversion). After initial configuration with the version control system, development teams can start focusing on the database objects and the changes to be made. All the integration with the version control system is handled internally by Toad.
The below screenshot shows the new Team Coding Dashboard, which is a single unified screen for all your Team Coding tasks:
Private Script Repository –You can now share scripts that your team uses in a much more portable way, and interact with the scripts’ owner, providing feedback, questions, and comments. Your private script repository becomes a new source during File Open and Save As operations in the Editor window.
Why would I use it? – Want to replace the file systems you’ve used to share scripts with a more secure and portable Oracle database? Private Script Repository provides more visibility on the access to your scripts, less worry about losing them (with database backups) and instant feedback, so you see how people are using them.
MyToad ( Remote script execution) – This cool feature was part of Toad 11.6 release and deserves a special mention for new release due to growing adoption of mobile computing. You can execute scripts and SQLs, as well as Toad actions (created in Automation Designer ), using web based GUI from another computer at home or even mobile phone. As a pre-requisite, dropbox account is needed.
Why would I use it? – How many times you had to stay at your desk for long time, waiting for a successful script execution? Wonder if you had the ability to run it again or run an alternate script while staying mobile? MyToad provides you the flexibility to do so and much more. This can be extended for running any Toad actions (export data, compare schema).
